THE shooting and subsequent arrest of John Kei, 43, by the police, has exposed the widely known but rarely reported Jakarta underworld of gun-toting gangsters, whose businesses range from drug dealing, extortion and paid assassinations to the more legitimate provision of security services. Kei is suspected of involvement in the murder of PT Sanex Steel Indonesia boss Tan Harry Tantono alias Ayung. What was the real motive behind Ayung’s murder? Tempo has received reports that the killing was linked to a business dispute rather than Ayung’s Rp600 million debt to John Kei, as earlier reported by the police.
