Medan's Deadly Divide
THE attempt to create the Province of Tapanuli ended in tragedy last Tuesday. Blocked initially by three factions, those behind the proposal resorted to high-level lobbying, supported by a number of important fi gures in Jakarta. Unfortunately, a demonstration in Medan supporting the establishment of the new province cost a human life. Abdul Aziz Angkat, North Sumatra Regional House of Representatives Speaker, died amid the mobs. Aziz sent his last text message to his colleagues, Syah and Saputran Don’t leave me alone Bang. They’re coming.”
