The purchase of Russian fighter planes and helicopters by the government has aroused controversies, particularly among particians at the House of Representatives (DPR). DPR Speaker Akbar Tandjung even demanded President Megawati clarify matter at the legislature. The purchase involves a great deal of money—US$193 million, about Rpl.74 trillion. Moreover, purchase is not included in the State Budget. The DPR has formed a special work committee, a Pansus, to probe the case. Megawati must prepare to answer all quest likely to be voiced during the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Annual Session next August. Still, many doubt that Pansus will succeed in carrying out its task.
