Shari’a Business Rising
SHARI’A banks and products are flourishing in Indonesia. Until last August there were a total of 135 institutions involved in Shari’a banking. The number keeps increasing, not just because of newcomers BCA and Lippo Bank, but also because there are 10 banks queuing up to apply for licenses, both for Shari’a banks and Shari’a business units. But beyond those consumers who switch for religious reasons, Shari’a banks will need to develop new ways to attract business. Business-wise, Shari’abanking must be able to offer more benefits than conventional systems. Tempo reports on the prospects for the industry.
