IN hindsight, the collapse of the 710-meter Mahakam II bridge at Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, was a disaster waiting to happen, given the negligence, the haphazard repairs and the difficulty in obtaining funds for its maintenance. Suspected inflated costs in the planning and operations could be an additional factor for its demise. Tempo goes behind the scenes to look at the cause and effect of this manmade disaster.
