Forest Grump: Environment Protection a la Bogor Regent, Forestry Minister, and Developer Cahyadi Kumala

THE expanding property business is slowly but surely taking over forested lands around Bogor regency, just outside Jakarta. Instead of rows of trees, the vista will be fi lled with rows of housing. One party eagerly pursuing this plan is Bukit Jonggol Asri, a subsidiary of Sentul City, a company whose majority shares are held by developer Kwee Cahyadi Kumala. Bukit Jonggol Asri’s march to the top means deforestation will take place, which means less protection against fl ooding in Jakarta. How did this escape the scrutiny of the environmental and forestry ministries? And the local government? Did money change hands to secure the necessary licenses for the required land swap?
