KPK Unplugged: Subverting the anti-corruption agency

KPK Unplugged: Subverting the anti-corruption agency THE SOUND OF SILENCE  The KPK’s wiretaps on corruption suspects may inadvertently provide a clue of a plot to attack the anti-graft commission leaders, Abraham Samad and Bambang Widjojanto. Strangely, however, the tapes are not being allowed to be heard in court, at the express wish of the current KPK chairman, who has  even denied the existence of any recording. This smacks of a cover-up. What other incriminating evidence can be gleaned from the KPK wiretaps?   WEARING WELL The second-hand clothing business is a sure-fi resuccess in markets around the country. Famous brand-name products— albeit used—are much in    demand, but the government is unhappy because the smugglers don’t pay duties and taxes. Indonesia has become a paradise of used clothes.    GREEN LOGGING Early this month, the Forestry Ministry reported that between 2014 and 2015, out of 90 forestry crimes committed, 59 consisted of illegal logging. Timber is a lucrative commodity,  though irresponsible logging can cause extreme deforestation, destroying the environment. About 54 cooperatives  around the country, many of them consisting of illegal loggers, have embraced an innovative concept. A new concession company in Berau, East  Kalimantan, tested this form of environmentally friendly logging, which tends to emit less carbon. Does it work? A few successes have been recorded, as reported by Tempo English.
