Nothing But The Truth

G30S Special Report TRACES of CIA involvement in the 1965 tragedy has become clearer. Clues indicate that this American intelligence body was closely linked to the Indonesian Army in the attempt to destroy the Indonesian Communist Party or PKI. CIA documents on Indonesia covering September to December 1965 and declassifi ed last July, reinforces its role in the ensuing bloodbath that followed the consequential events of September 30, five decades ago. In addition to reviewing the CIA’s role, Tempo also looks at the possibility of assistance given to the Army by other government, such as those of Great Britain and Australia. New fi ndings indicate Japanese offi cials also helped in providing funds for the anti-PKI military campaign. Law: The Sadistic Killing Of Salim SALIM—better known by his nickname Kancil (deer mouse)—was a small farmer who dared to go against illegal sand miners in the village of Selok Awar Awar in Lumajang, East Java and for that, died a terrible death on September 26. He was brutally attacked by a gang of thugs at the instigation of Selok Awar Awar village chief, Hariyono, who has held his job since 2008 and profited by issuing licenses to the sand miners. Salim and a few other brave farmers were protesting the environmental damage caused by the mining of nearby Watu Pecak beach, on their farmlands. Law: The Sadistic Killing Of Salim; Outreach: Power Women In Papua THE women in Papua seem to have ‘morphed’ in the past two decades. Many of them used to remain silent when they were treated unjustly. Today, they are assertive and independent, ready to extend a helping hand. The empowerment of Papuan women can be attributed to the actions of a few prominent ‘mamas’ or women. Among them are Doli Yakadewa and Fientje Jarangga from the TIKI Network of Human Rights for Women in Papua, along with Preacher Dora Balubun in Jayapura, Agusta Kopeouw at Sentani and Jana Salomina Hikoyabi, head of the Jayapura Planning Baord and founder of Suara Perempuan Papua (Voice of Papua Women) tabloid. Early this month Hana won the 2015 SK Trimurti Award. Tempo English reports on their tireless campaign to achieve women’s rights in Papua.
