ALLEGATIONS of extortion by a member of the House of Representatives (DPR) Finance & Banking Commission against Bank Indonesia dominated the news last week. An official of the central bank claims he was asked to give Rp100 billion by a Finance Commission member to facilitate the enactment of four bills proposed by Bank Indonesia. They are the draft laws on the currency, transfer of funds, Financial Services Authority (FSA) and Bank Indonesia’s annual budget. How was the blackmail carried out? And why is the DPR in denial?
