Slow on the Draw
AFTER the attack that left three Ahmadiyah members dead in Cikeusik, Banten and the destruction of a church in Temanggung, Central Java, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has threatened to disband organizations that commit anarchic acts. Assuming the fi nger was pointed at the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), the group launched its own counter- threat of deposing the Yudhoyono government. Their demand was that Ahmadiyah in Indonesia be dissolved. The deadline? March 2011. The threat by FPI leader Habib Muhammad Rizieq Shihab is being seen as an attempt to rebel against the state, but the law enforcement authorities appear to be ignoring the threat. What is behind the FPI’s defi ant opposition?
