
A New Dawn in Ishinomaki
Japan is rising from the rubble after being devastated by the tsunami and earthquake of March 11. Three Tempo journalists witnessed how this post-disaster resurrection is taking place, with little fanfare. Sendai, Hiraizumi, Matsushima, and Ishinomaki, some of the areas mostseriously hit, have risen from the dead, cleaned up in a neat and orderly way. In the hippest sections of the heart of Tokyo—Shibuya and Harajuku—the effects of the massive disaster were swallowed up by the summer fashion extravaganza adorning the streets of the capital. Here are some excerpts from their trip last June to July.
