60 Years Asia-Africa Conference: Concrete Outcomes
THE first major conference since Asian and African leaders met in 1955 ended with a walk by 31 heads of states and representatives of 89 nations along Asia-Africa Boulevard in historic Bandung city. But was anything concrete achieved behind the glitter and glamor of that Rp200 billion gala event? Beyond Third World rhetoric and statements, it may be the bilateral and side meetings on business prospects that could actually come to fruition. Certainly, the reinvigorated Asia-Africa Strategic Partnership and the new Asia-Africa Business Council can be the big boosters. The hope, however, is that the Declaration on Palestine will help propel the campaign for independence and global recognition of the only country in Asia-Africa which remains under foreign occupation.
