AS the controversy over the forged Hendra Gunawan and Sudjojono paintings found at the Oei Hong Djien Museum continues to roil, a book full of ‘new Hendras’ was published by collector, stockbroker and arms dealer Agung Tobing, a distant cousin of Oei Hong Djien. Entitled Hendra Gunawan—Sang Pelukis Rakyat, the book features over 200 paintings selected by the the late Hendra’s wife, Nuraeni. Critics say dozens of the paintings in the book are forgeries. Some even put the number of fakes at 200. But Nuraeni insists the paintings she selected are originals. As Hendra Gunawan’s wife, she says she is the best judge of their authenticity.
