Susno Duadji, the former chief of detectives at National Police Headquarters, accuses Sjahril of being the main player behind the case of Gayus Tambunan—a low-level tax officer who had billions of rupiah in his bank account. According to information obtained by Tempo, Sjahril had a major influence over the Tanggerang District Court, which freed Gayus from cases of corruption, money laundering, and embezzlement.
