Barus, Bali and Beyond: Tourism in ASEAN
As a simmering eurozone crisis seems set to linger well into 2012, millions of tourists from China to Australia have chosen to hop onto planes and seek holidays and investment options in Southeast Asia. The numbers speak for themselves. Nearly 74 million tourist arrivals were recorded across ASEAN member nations in the first seven months of 2011 up from over 65.5 million in 2009. Indeed, considerable attention seems to have been paid to the travel industry in the region over the past decade. However, much work still needs to be done on the transport infrastructure front. Moreover, not much research material can readily be found on what impact tourismrelated foreign direct investments across ASEAN will have on local firms, skilled workers and policy plans for the next 10 years. And the tourism industry will progress farther and faster, if governments in ASEAN can commit their political will to recognize the tourism sector as a vital contributor to their economies
