Bloody Dawn at Ular River
The Look of Silence, filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer's follow-up to the acclaimed documentary The Act of Killing, presents a fragment of the dark history of Seli Serdang, North Sumatra. The film is the newest chapter in the documentation of the military-instigated mass killings of 1965, which are still coming to light after decades of suppression. The Look of Silence depicts Adi Rukun's efforts to discover who slaughtered his older brother, Ramli, who was believed to be involved in the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI). One by one, Adi confronts his brother's killers. Tempo spoke with Adi, met the murderers and retraced the violence of 1965 in Deli Serdang—from Ramli's grave to Ular River, where slaughtered victims were thrown. Tempo also interviewed Werner Herzog, the legendary German director, who produced both films
