THE earthquake that devastated Nias Island last Monday night graphically illustrates our inability in facing a disaster. We lack adequate facilities and equipment to make an immediate response. Even President Yudhoyono needed 24 hours to announce an emergency situation after the quake struck. Will a similar situation happen when another disaster occurs again in the future?
