PROTESTS spread like wildfi re throughout the country last week over the government’s plan to raise fuel prices. Some of the demonstrations ended in destruction: police cars burnt, the fence around the parliament building breached. Equally chaotic was the maneuvering by legislators in parliament. Some who at first supported the government withdrew their backing out of public pressure. Till the end of the week, the question of whether fuel prices should go up or not remained hanging.
