THE crash of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 on the slopes of Mount Salak two weeks ago was a tragedy and a mystery at the same time. The dialog between the Superjet’s pilot and the air traffi c controller at Soekarno-Hatta airport was the clue to what happened during the fi nal moments before the plane hit the mountain. It is from such a tower that the pilot obtains information on conditions of his fl ight, the right timing to land and other myriad guidance. What really happened at the control room and to what extent was it the responsibility of the air traffi c controller on that tragic day?
