THE fight for control of the Gunung Tumpang Pitu gold mine in Banyuwangi, East Java is coming to a head. Australian investor Intrepid Mines Ltd has broken off with local partner Indo Multi Niaga, while dragged into the fray are media mogul-cum-politician Surya Paloh and business tycoon Edwin Soeryadjaya. The stakes are high—US$5 billion worth of reserves—but so are the challenges, given that the gold mine is atop a protected forest area.
