A Book and a Soldier's Shame

As a presidential candidate, Gen. (ret) Wiranto objects to revelations about his past that could harm his image. Wiranto is being portrayed as a military officer who allowed undemocratic methods to be used in the disturbances in the run-up to the 1998 Special Session of the MPR. The man telling the story is another senior military officer, Maj. Gen. (ret) Kivlan Zen, former chief of staff of Kostrad. In his book, Kivlan tells of his role in establishing and running the mass organization known as the People\'s Volunteer Security Force (Pam Swakarsa) on the orders of Wiranto, the then Indonesian Military commander. Kivlan has told his story in interviews with the press, on TV and radio, and most recently, in his book Conflict and Integration of the Indonesian Army, which was launched last week.
