Sidoarjo Crisis
TWO and a half months have passed since the Sidoarjo disaster first \'surfaced.\' All efforts to stem the flow of mud—which began on May 29 at the site of the PT Lapindo Brantas drilling operation near Banjar Panji village, Sidoarjo district—have come to nothing. The flow of mud has even increased, and has now reached around 50,000 cubic meters a day. The rainy season, which seems likely to arrive in October, signals the need for an urgent solution to this environmental catastrophe.
