ALTHOUGH 5-year-old Raisah Ali was recently released and her kidnappers arrested by police, don’t breathe a sigh of relief just yet. Kidnappings are on the rise: in the past two months there have been 14 cases in and around Jakarta alone. In general, people close to the victims have been involved. This high frequency of kidnappings should serve as a serious warning to parents and educators, not to mention the police. Without the severest possible punishment, it’s likely that the list of kidnap victims will grow.
