BUSINESS AS USUAL. The return of the tycoons and why economic reform is faltering.
It turns out that reforms have not signifi cantly changed the profi le of our entrepreneurs—those who control the economic domain. True, several “new” tycoons have made terrific progress over the last ten years. For example, such property magnates as Trihatma Kusuma Halim with the Agung Podomoro Group, or the Katuari family of Surabaya with the Wings Group. However, generally the old-time conglomerates remain in control. True, they were down once, but they have now risen to their former glory and have even “multiplied.” They remain undefeatable.
