Sermons by habibs have become the latest trend. These are young, 40- to 50-year-old graduates of religious schools in Yemen, Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries. Some are indistinguishable from other popular icons, dressed fashionably up-to-date, their BlackBerries and laptops always within reach. Yet others prefer being seen in the image of their forefathers from Hadramaut, the southern Arabian Peninsula that became the Yemen Republic. How do they explain their charismatic attraction over thousands of followers? Can their influence survive the test of time?
