FROM his safe haven in Singapore, former Democrat Party treasurer, M. Nazaruddin, managed to stirup quite a storm in Jakarta. As the corruption case enters a new chapter, Nazaruddin implicates other public figures, such as National Police Crime Investigation Unit chief, Gen. Ito Sumardi, in the crimes he has recently been charged with. Tempo’s investigation indicates Ito might have been a recipient of Nazaruddin’s largesse, along with other senior officers in the police force. Interestingly, the case provided a window into how Nazaruddin dealt with the police—from muddying cases to putting pressure on business colleagues.
