THE Rp1.59-trillion project to bring the internet closer to the poor, especially in remote areas, initiated by the Communications Ministry is unraveling. The vehicles providing internet services (MPLIK) are being misused for purposes other than cheap internet access. Ditto the PLIK project, intended to provide more permanent internet services. The projects are badly neglected because the down payment given to  elkom—the biggest tender winner—instead went to people close to Communications Minister Tifatul Sembiring. Justice and Prosperity Party cadres are also believed to have intervened in the PLIK project.
