It was not easy for PDI-P Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri to decide on Jusuf Kalla as Joko Widodo’s vice-presidential candidate. Proposals and pressure poured in from various political walks of life. No less than the chairman of the once-mighty Golkar Party, Aburizal Bakrie came courting, only to be ruthlessly rejected, when he offered himself for the job. Kalla’s main rival, KPK Chairman Abraham Samad, also fell by the wayside. What led Jokowi to fi nally choose businessman and former Vice President Kalla?
