Blind Injustice

Blind Injustice MARY Jane Veloso barely escaped death by execution. Arrested for smuggling heroin in Yogyakarta in 2010, she was tried, found guilty and sentenced to death. But at the 11th hour she was spared the fi ring squad after President Jokowi ordered a stay of execution. Tempo traces the background of Mary Jane in her native Philippines, in the small village of Esguerra in Nueva Ecija province. It was a close neighbor who brought her to the dirty business of drug dealing and almost to her death.   Interlude: Ancient Stone Treasures Overseas IN a warehouse at Gravensande in The Netherlands, some 22 inscribed stone slabs from ancient Javanese kingdoms are being kept. The Sangguran Prasasti or inscribed stone monument, from Kajang village in Mojorejo, East Java, dating back more than 200 years lies in the backyard of the residence of the seventh Earl of Minto at Hawick, Roxburghshire, near the Tevoit River, between Scotland and England. Tempo reports on these antique Javanese monuments found in such far-fl ung places as Europe and even India.   Outreach: Drones And The Environment THE Tayan Hilir tribe of West Kalimantan almost lost its lands to a commercial concession area because of unclear and overlapping directives. To save their 300-hectare land, the Tayan Hilir people turned to drone technology with amazing results. Drones may be a hobby for some, but for the tribesmen in Kalimantan the drone has proven to be their lifesaver. In little more than a year, the Tayan Hilir people were able to reclaim their land—thanks to a redrawn map based on photographs taken by a drone. The data was the basis of their claims at the Constitutional Court, which approves evidence resulting from pictures taken by drones. They are expected to provide more proof of environmental destruction in forested areas. A Tempo English report.
