Kidneys For Cash

Kidneys For Cash THE police recently uncovered a syndicate brokering human kidneys for sale to patients inside a state-run hospital, arresting three suspects. The trade in human organs is illegal yet the ring is believed to have convinced 14 ‘donors’ to sell their kidneys to patients willing to pay the price of Rp300-400 million per organ. The donors/victims are mostly poor people in desperate need of money. Economy: Chicken Cartel SOARING prices of chicken are a clear indication the government is powerless in the face of the poultry cartel’s attempt at pricefixing. A small number of dominant chicken suppliers is believed to have carried out early culling just to ensure profi ts, oblivious to the impact in the local market. Who are the members of this powerful cartel and will they persevere? Outreach: Health Care For All THE age-old saying that health is better than wealth is undeniable, which is why places where people still fi nd it hard to get health services are classified as poor and under-developed. The government has drawn up a health care strategy plan, calling for a total overhaul of the public health care system, focusing on upgrading community health centers and their medical personnel. It’s uphill going but where regions such as East Nusa Tenggara, local governments are collaborating with civil society, have been successful. Tempo English reports from East Flores and North Central Timor regencies.
