The Politics of Mobocracy

The Politics of Mobocracy THE December 2 rally uncovered an alleged plot to overthrow the government of President Joko Widodo. The police claim it has proof of a conspiracy to commit treason just as the third Defense of Islam rally was being held at the National Monument Park last week. Is there a link between the suspected political plot and the protests? Could that have been the reason for the government’s hurried and harried lobbying of political parties and religious leaders prior to the rally? Economy: Mystifying Singaporean Lobbying AS a result of repairs being done on Soekarno-Hatta airport runway, a number of airline routes and flights have either been cut down or rescheduled. Yet, among the many international carriers affected by this development, only Singapore Airlines has protested loudly and vigorously, even soliciting the lobbying efforts of its highest government officials. The intense campaign has mystified their counterparts at the Transportation Ministry in Jakarta. Outreach: Green Energy Lights Up Sumba SUMBA, an island in East Nusa Tenggara province, is blessed with an abundance of nature’s elements—wind, sunlight and water—renewable sources of energy. Yet, despite this great potential, the island’s electrification, according to Dutch development organization Hivos, is only 24.5 percent. Collaborating with other organizations and with government support, Hivos launched its Sumba Iconic Island project, with the goal to produce 100 percent renewable energy by 2020 around the province.
