MARY Jane Veloso barely escaped death by execution. Arrested for smuggling heroin in Yogyakarta in 2010, she was tried, found guilty and sentenced to death. But at the 11th hour she was spared the fi ring squad after President Jokowi ordered a stay of execution. Tempo traces the background of Mary Jane in her native Philippines, in the small village of Esguerra in Nueva Ecija province.
