A Qur’an for All Languages

TRANSLATIONS of the Qur’an into local languages actually started during the 1800s, when Semarang-based Kiai Sholeh Darat translated the holy book into Javanese. Last month, Muslims in Madura launched their version of the Qur’an in their local dialect. Yet not a few of the religious leaders in the area have rejected the translation. Tempo looks at this quiet reform movement in Aceh, in West Java and Mandar, in addition to Madura.
