Jakarta After Midnight
THE death of Seaman Arifi n Siri as a result of a violent attack by members of a motorcycle gang on March 31, triggered a series of brutal assaults that may have been carried out in revenge. Hundreds of bikers described as big, tough and carrying traditional swords, sharpened bamboo poles and hatchets, drove around in a convoy seeking bikers at sites where illegal races take place. Unfortunately, collateral damage is unavoidable when these gang wars break out. The attackers are suspected to be members of the navy and the army, non-combatants working at mess halls or guarding military-owned empty plots of land. What really happened? Why are these law-and-order cases so difficult to solve? How serious a threat to public security are these motorcycle gangs?
