THE Yudhoyono-Kalla government finally took the unpopular move of reducing the budget deficit. The fuel subsidy is cut down from RplOl.5 trillion to Rp89.2 trillion. Since Friday night last week, gasoline, diesel and kerosene prices have increased from between 50 to 185 percent. Within hours, the effect spread; prices skyrocketed; many companies are threatened with closure. Demonstrations occurred in many cities, with several former presidents and retired generals blamed as the actors behind the actions. How badly will the fuel crisis damage the government?
