Investigation: Water Torture
IT is Jakarta people who flood their own city. The culprits are the owners of illegal villas in the Puncak area of Bogor. Many are former government officials: bureaucrats, governors, up to generals. Letters were sent to the owners of hundreds of the villas, asking them to demolish their own buildings, without a clear deadline. But with such an ineffectual approach, not a single owner demolished their holiday home. The Bogor administration declared itself ready to demolish 1,162 villas, but the 21 that should have been removed last week in the first phase are still standing The matter has become very important in the run-up to the Jakarta gubernatorial election. On the candidates’ shoulders is the burden to reduce the factors which contribute to flooding in Jakarta.
