City Of The Dammed
FLOODING inundated many parts of Jakarta. Pluit, in the north of the city, was the worst-affected area when dams and embankments failed to contain the rushing waters. Overuse of land, negligent management of water pumps and increasing subsidence played a big part in aggravating the situation. A lack of political will may answer the big question on why we never seem to learn from previous, equally destructive recurrences.
