ISIS Tours

ISIS Tours QUIETLY, militant groups in Indonesia are sending people to join and fi ght with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), many of them recruited by members of old terrorist networks. A few weeks ago, 32 Indonesians travelling in two separate groups were arrested by Turkish border police. It was not the fi rst time. They held a list of 159 other Indonesians—with their names and addresses—who had previously managed to cross over into ISIS territory. Given existing legislation, what can the government do to take preventive action against these would-be ISIS followers? Tempo reports from the Turkish-Syirian border.   Law: The Hai Fa Travesty ARRESTED at sea carrying tons of illegally caught fi sh and shrimps, including 15 tons of protected hammer-head sharks, the MV Hai Fa escaped being unceremoniously sunk, the fate of other foreign vessels caught fi shing illegally. In Ambon’s local courts, far from the central government’s scrutiny, the Panama-flagged ship was merely given a slap on the wrist, incurring the wrath of Minister Susi. What really happened and what can she do to prevent corruption in the fi shing industry?   Outreach: River Rescuers CLOSE to 98 percent of rivers in Indonesia today are polluted by industrial waste and household refuse, according to the Environment Ministry. In some cities, fortunately, residents have taken the initiative to clean up their rivers, with no help from the government. In Medan, North Sumatra, Budi Bahar Yong asked children to pick rubbish out of the Deli River every time they play on its banks. In Dumai, Riau, a group of youths comb a river with their small boat, amassing cubic-loads of garbage. Tempo English reports on their challenges, in commemoration of International Day of Action for Rivers on March 14.
