Power, Interrupted

Power, Interrupted DAHLAN Iskan breached regulations to push for the construction of 21 power relay stations in Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara in 2011. As CEO of state-owned electricity company PLN, he fi nagled the disbursement of Rp1.063 trillion out of the Finance Ministry to fund the projects. The state reportedly incurred a loss of Rp33 billion, as a consequence, which led to the arrest of Dahlan, as the project executor, and some of his subordinates. He wanted to speed up the process of providing much needed electricity. But he violated procedures and cut corners. Will he go to jail? Investigation: Cross-Border Drugs ILLEGAL drugs continue to be smuggled into the country, most frequently across border towns in remote areas and islands, where security is light and opportunities are high. Tempo follows the smugglers trail, across porous border areas. Interview: Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin on Interfaith Tolerance OWNERS of warung makan (small eateries) are hopeful they can remain open during the month of Ramadhan, because Religious Aff airs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin in his Twitter account recently tweeted that such establishments should not be forced to close shop just to honor those who fast. He stated that those who are not obliged to fast must also be respected. Outreach: Acts Of Atonement IT’S never easy for ex-inmates to pick up the pieces of their lives after doing prison time. Petty criminals and serious offenders alike often face public stigma that deter their efforts to start leading meaningful lives. Lucky for them, there are NGOs like the Kipas Foundation in Bengkulu comprising former drug addicts to guide and help out former inmates. In West Kalimantan, Poltak, a former illegal logger who assembled an environmentally friendly power generator for his community. While in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Cagi, once an illegal shark hunter, now spends his time teaching and conserving coastal marine life. Tempo English reports on these acts of atonement.
