Digital Deals BUSINESS transactions over Indonesian cyberspace has been booming, prompting the government to consider it the engine of economic growth and a major source of tax revenue. Last year online transactions topped Rp168 trillion. Even President Joko Widodo has been suffi ciently impressed to direct the development of a strategy on how the state can benefi t more from the expanding e-commerce. But not all of his ministries are of one mind in pursuing this digital dream and like any venture, it needs legal parameters to manage the ups and the downs. Law: A Presidential Prerogative THE Constitutional Court recently decreed, following a judicial review of the law on the People’s Consultative Council (MPR), the House of Representative (DPR), the People’s Regional Council (DPD) and the Regional Houses of Representatives (DPRD), that any intention of questioning or investigating members of those institutions, requires the presidential nod. This clearly contravenes its own 2012 decree, which revoked the same presidential requirement, on regional chief executives. What changed the minds of the Constitutional Court judges? Outreach: From People For People THE success of the NTT (East Nusa Tenggara) Youth Project in raising funds for its Village Library project can be attributed to the online Kitabisa.com account. Then there’s GandengTangan.com, which played a big role in helping the Yayasan Cinta Alam Pertanian (the Love Farming Foundation) raise tens of millions of rupiah to help farmers after their sorghum harvest at Adonara Island in East Nusa Tenggara. Raising funds from the public, otherwise known as crowdfunding, through the social media is a new phenomenon which has gone viral in Indonesia in the past five years. The objective of the funds are usually social projects, social entrepreneurial activities and startup businesses. But questions still remain over its legality and the lack of regulations.
