INITIALLY, the Naval Medical Research Unit No. 2 (Namru-2) laboratory was set up by the United States in Jakarta to study infectious tropical diseases. It was Namru-2 that identified the chikungunya outbreak in Bogor and the first avian flu attack on humans in Tangerang. But now the laboratory is suspected of carrying out espionage activities and serving as a base for sending Indonesia’s genetic ‘wealth’ to the US.
